LOTR and Ponniyin Selvan

*Originally appeared in my other blog on November 27, 2007

This is the third time I am seeing Lord Of The Rings Trilogy. This time I watched with my wife. My wife is seeing it for the first time. After seeing the first two parts, she cant really wait to see the The Return Of The King – the third and the last part.  We just finished seeing it.

Its awesome, totally fascinating and most importantly fresh. All the time I watch this, I get the same feeling, same smile and the same tears(Ok, different tears!). I live with them. Peter Jackson took me to their world, and I spread myself in Middle Earth and fight the orcs. And love the shires.

I don’t really think that a movie of this much impact can be produced later. May be technically, it is possible, but would it implant such lingering thoughts? Quite doubtful.

But one thought always comes in my mind, whenever I get a chance to see this movie or just a scene from this movie. That thought is to produce Ponniyin Selvan as a film. Ponniyin Selvan is an epic in Tamil Language. It was written by Kalki.R.Krishnamoorthy and it is considered as one of the best historical novel in Tamil. Even though Pudhumaipithan had different opinion about Kalki, one cannot deny, Ponniyin Selvan is a master piece.

Ponniyin Selvan is about Chozhas (Pronounce as Cholas). Chozhas were one of the three kings, who ruled TamilNadu, in a particular time, long back. (The other two were Pandiyas and Cheras) Ponniyin Selvan means Son of The River Ponni. And the son, referred here is, Raja Raja Chozhan, one of our greatest kings.

History says that he is really brave, that he fought all the way to Ganges and brought the water from Ganges. Even it is said that he brought the water, by forcing the kings of the north India to carry it on their heads, to south. And that’s why he is referred as “Gangai Konda Chozhan”. (The Chozha who brought Ganges to South India!)

This epic novel “Ponniyin Selvan” is about Raja Raja Chozan (Ponniyin Selvan) , Aditya Karikalan and Valavarayan Vandhiyathevan. RajaRaja chozhan and Aditya Karikalan are brothers and Vandhiyathevan is a king of a small province, which was captured by the Chozhas. And Vandhiyathevan helps the chozhas in some part of their mission, so that they would give back his kingdom. It is impossible to fight and win them, the chozhas. The entire novel is about the betrayal and treachery done by the inside men in Chozha Kingdom, to get the kingdom. Those inside men tries to kill Raja Raja Chozhan and Rajendra Chozhan when they were away from Trichi (the Capital of Chozha dynasty), on a mission, a war.

The story revolves around this treachery and how RajaRaja Chozhan beats them to dust and gets back the throne, with the help of Vandhiyathevan and his dear ones.

I wish, Manirathnam to direct this movie. It is said that Manirathnam had written screenplay for this movie. And I want Kamalhassan to play the lead role of RajaRaja Chozhan. And most importantly, Rajnikanth playing Vandhiyathevan. Oh, I love that role, Vandhiyathevan. And I would love to see Rajnikanth in that role.

And I want Ilayaraja to score the music. The villain role must be played by Sathiyaraj and Nepolean, periya pazhvetarayar and chinna pazhuvetarayar.

It is said that Kamalahassan is having the rights for the movie. It s sait that, the rights for the movie, was with SivajiGanesan and it changed hands to MGR and now it is with Kamalahassan. I dont know how much it is true.

When Kamalahassan, Manirathnam, Rajnikanth,Ilayaraja and Sathyaraj join hands, what could stop them? May be ego?

Hubble repair mission in IMAX

image

Hubble repair mission is being released in IMAX.WOW! Here is the trailer. I don’t know when it will be released in Singapore’s Omni-Theatre.

Few weeks back, I took my wife and my baby (18 months old) to IMAX to see “Under the Sea”. I have already seen this movie and it is a treat for underwater lovers. (My wife likes to see underwater creatures, though, I haven’t developed that interest). My baby was doing OK until the film started. Once the film started and when the water is all over us, she was scared and started screaming at high pitch. Some viewers have started expressing contempt already. I got no choice except to come out! I played with my child showing this and that, while my wife finished watching the movie. But some how she didn’t like the movie much; may be because I was not there!

Hope this Hubble repair movie comes to Singapore after few months!

On Kamal’s 50 year service

Vijay TV is sporting a new program on Kamal’s 50 years of service in Tamil (Can I say Indian?) film industry. Service? How else can I put it?

(What I don’t like with Vijay TV Singapore is their continuous irritable repeated telecast of the advertisements of their own program. One can not count the number of times “Anbe Va” serial’s advertisement is telecasted with in one hour with his own fingers.)

Ok now to the point. I have been seeing this Kamalum-Thamizhum (Kamal and Tamil), Kamalum kadhalum (Kamal and Love) et., all kind of programs coming up in Vijay TV.

One cannot deny that he is one of the best available actors in Indian cinema and particularly Tamil cinema industry. I fell in love with Kamal’s acting after I saw his movie Sathya. For other than Tamil readers: If you have never seen this movie, now go rent it or buy it or download it or do what ever and make sure you see that movie. That is one of the master piece performance by Kamalhassan. One might say that his crying in Mahanathi or his crying in Punnagai Mannan is his best performance. But I doubt it.

Ok I accept that I cried in the theater when I was watching this movie Mahanathi. But that is an emotion. An emotion that was being built up right from the starting of the movie and it waited for its time to burst out. If you watch just that scene alone I bet you will not have that kind of emotion.

An acting must be natural that when you see the performance you must never see the actor in it, but you must see the character. But in most of his movies once in a while appearing characters will be totally wiped out by the strong wiper Kamalhassan. Guna, Thevar Magan, Hey Ram are to name a few; not to forget Sandiyar.

Even though I am a fan of Rajini, I liked and loved very few performances of Kamal. Here is the list:

  1. Varumaiyin Niram Sigapu
  2. Aboorva Sagotharargal (For Appu’s innocent smile)
  3. Sathya
  4. Indiran Chandran (for the Mayor)
  5. Micahel Madana Kamarajan (for showing 4 different characters)
  6. Salangai Oli (only young performance)
  7. Oru Kaithiyin Dairy (only old performance)
  8. Vettaiyadu Vialayadu
  9. Dasavatharam (Vincent Pooavaragavan)
  10. Vikaram (For his style and charm)
I liked and loved Velu Nayakar before I saw Don Corleone. I still don’t know why Kamal had to imitate Marlan Brando and Al Pacino.
Even now when I see Al Pacino in some movies I cannot help but relate his mannerisms with Kamal. If you have doubts watch Insomnia and God Father part 2. Did Al Pacino follow the styles of Kamal Hassan?
Also why in the world Kamal has to remake the movie A Wednesday? My friends say that he has done it to pass the message to all including C section. Bullshit.  And the message in the movie A Wednesday is utterly stupid, that you can eliminate (or reduce) the violence by killing the terrorists. One of the cheap commercial tactic to attract already confused youngsters.
If Kamal ever wish to do a remake of a Hindi movie and yet want to pass a good message to the so called B and C section then he must act in the remake of Lage Raho Munnabhai and Taare Zameen Par. After I watched Taare Zameen Par, I repeatedly asked this question to myself: why our so called legends in Tamil cinema didn’t ever think of a movie in this theme? Can they ever? I share Charu’s view on this regard.

Kamal is there in the industry for 50 years. But why can’t he change the Tamil cinema in these 50 years? He was constantly criticizing Tamil people for not supporting his movies which he and his few die hard fans considered classic like Guna et., all. He (and his fans too) has utterly under estimated the Tamil audience.

Now there is a visible change happening here in Tamil industry. Loads of good movies from good directors had been made. Mozhi, Kaadhal, Veyil, Subramaniyapuram, Pasanga to name a few. Did the Tamil audience not support these movies? The architects of this change are apparently Shankar (as a producer) and Prakash Raj. They identified and introduced good directors. They produced and experimented movies. That was very bold. One fine example is “Imsai Arasan 23aam Pulikesi”.

Now, why can’t (or didn’t) Kamal do this? Don’t mistake me. I cannot put this question to Vijayakanth or Rajnikanth for simple reason: they are not Ulaga nayagarkal (Heroes of the world!).
